Backend Software Engineer (Distributed Systems – Go / Rust / Java)

About the Role

They're now looking for a Backend Software Engineer who enjoys solving complex distributed systems problems and wants to build infrastructure that makes a genuine difference beyond the screen. This isn't about building another API or maintaining existing services. You'll work on the systems responsible for ingesting, processing and storing high-volume data, making it accessible at scale and ensuring everything performs reliably in production. And you'll have real ownership over what you build, from architecture through to deployment and performance optimisation.

Responsibilities

• Build distributed backend systems that ingest, process and store large volumes of real-time telemetry and sensor data.
• Design scalable data infrastructure, including storage, indexing and querying systems for time-series and event-driven datasets.
• Solve complex performance challenges, improving throughput, latency, fault tolerance and system reliability.
• Optimise production systems, identifying bottlenecks and improving performance as the platform scales.
• Work with modern infrastructure, including Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform and cloud platforms.
• Collaborate with experienced engineers across product and infrastructure to solve complex technical challenges.
• Influence technical direction, contributing to architecture decisions and engineering best practices.

Required Skills

• 3+ years of experience building and maintaining backend or distributed systems in production.
• Strong programming experience in Go, Rust or Java.
• Experience building systems where performance, scalability and reliability matter.
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP or Azure.
• Familiarity with containerisation and infrastructure tools such as Kubernetes, Docker or Terraform.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts, including concurrency, fault tolerance, consistency and performance optimisation.
• Someone who enjoys taking ownership, solving difficult engineering problems and seeing their work through to production.

Preferred Skills

• Time-series databases, columnar storage or analytics engines such as ClickHouse, TimescaleDB, Druid or InfluxDB.
• Streaming and data processing technologies such as Kafka, Flink, Spark or Apache Arrow.
• Working with high-volume telemetry, event-driven systems or complex data pipelines.
