Rust Engineering Lead - Linux and Open Source

About the Role

The Rust Engineering Lead will shape the future of Linux and open source software by promoting the adoption of Rust across system-level technologies. This role combines hands-on software development with technical leadership and community collaboration, focusing on improving the reliability, security, and maintainability of existing systems.

What You'll Do

• Lead and contribute to Rust engineering initiatives across Linux and open source projects.
• Design, implement, test, and document high-quality software using Rust on Linux.
• Drive and advocate for broader Rust adoption across internal and upstream open source projects.
• Identify existing projects, services, and codebases where Rust adoption could deliver meaningful technical benefits.
• Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve issues encountered by users and contributors.
• Participate in code reviews, architectural reviews, and broader engineering processes.
• Collaborate with colleagues and open source communities to develop technical specifications and architectural solutions.
• Identify opportunities to improve engineering, development, and operational practices.
• Deploy and operate services developed by the team where required.
• Provide technical advocacy and contribute to the long-term success of assigned products and projects.
• Help advance Linux and open source development through knowledge sharing and community participation.

Who You Are

• Accomplished software engineer with strong Linux experience and a passion for Rust and open source.
• Demonstrated professional experience designing and developing high-quality Rust software on Linux.
• Strong hands-on experience with Linux at the system level and familiarity with multiple Linux environments.
• Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a compelling alternative professional or academic background.
• Strong academic record and a demonstrated history of significant technical achievement.
• Experience building, deploying, and operating distributed systems and APIs for more senior positions.
• Strong problem-solving abilities, technical curiosity, and a track record of delivering beyond expectations.
• Ability to organize work effectively, work independently, and consistently deliver to schedule.
• Strong written and spoken English communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across cultures, teams, and time zones.
• High levels of accountability, flexibility, self-motivation, and attention to results.
• Passion for Rust, Linux, open source software, and continuous technical improvement.
• Willingness and ability to travel twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.

Bonus Points

• Experience with Ubuntu or related open source technologies.
• Familiarity with technologies such as LXD, MicroK8s, Snap, IoT, Juju, Ubuntu Core, or Ubuntu Pro.
• Experience in performance engineering or security.
