Rust Backend Engineer

About the Role

We're looking for a Software Engineer with strong Rust experience to help build the core infrastructure behind Rover AI. You'll work on high-performance backend services, distributed systems, and data processing pipelines that power our platform. As an early engineering hire, you'll have significant ownership over the systems you build and the opportunity to influence architecture, engineering practices, and the direction of our platform.

What You'll Do

• Design and build high-performance backend services in Rust.
• Develop reliable, scalable systems for ingesting, processing, and serving large volumes of data.
• Build distributed systems that prioritize performance, fault tolerance, and operational simplicity.
• Optimize applications for low latency, efficient resource utilization, and high throughput.
• Design clean APIs and well-structured, maintainable software.
• Build observable systems with meaningful logging, metrics, and monitoring.
• Debug production issues, identify performance bottlenecks, and continuously improve system reliability.
• Collaborate closely with engineers across product, infrastructure, AI, and security to deliver production-ready solutions.
• Take ownership of services from design and implementation through deployment and ongoing operation.

What We're Looking For

• Strong experience building production backend systems in Rust.
• Solid understanding of asynchronous and concurrent programming.
• Experience building distributed or event-driven systems.
• Good understanding of databases, data modeling, and backend application architecture.
• Experience working with cloud platforms and modern infrastructure.
• Strong debugging, profiling, and performance optimization skills.
• Experience designing and maintaining reliable APIs and backend services.
• Commitment to writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
• Ability to work independently in a fast-moving startup environment and take ownership of technical decisions.

Nice to Have

• Experience building large-scale data platforms or distributed infrastructure.
• Familiarity with cybersecurity, security operations, observability, or log analytics.
• Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies.
• Knowledge of systems programming, networking, or storage systems.
• Experience contributing to open-source projects.
