About the Role
About the Role
The Senior Rust Systems Engineer will focus on building and maintaining embedded proxy software for a large fleet of school-network appliances. This role involves developing production-grade Rust software, optimizing performance, and collaborating with engineers in a distributed environment.
What You'll Do
- Own the design, development, and maintenance of embedded proxy software running on hardware appliances deployed across distributed customer environments.
- Develop production systems software in Rust, working close to the operating system, network stack, and constrained hardware.
- Implement and optimize networking functionality, including TCP stream handling, socket programming, transparent proxying, and related low-level components.
- Work with embedded Linux at the OS and driver level, including device drivers, kernel modules, cross-compilation, and hardware bring-up where required.
- Build and maintain containerized workloads suitable for constrained appliance environments.
- Conduct performance testing, load testing, memory and CPU profiling, and flame graph analysis to identify and resolve bottlenecks.
- Contribute to cloud-connected infrastructure and fleet management capabilities using AWS and Infrastructure as Code principles.
- Collaborate with engineering and product stakeholders to define architecture, troubleshoot complex technical issues, and deliver reliable solutions.
- Apply engineering best practices around code quality, observability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
Who You Are
- 6+ years of overall software engineering experience, including at least 3 years of hands-on production Rust development in a systems or embedded environment rather than web or application development.
- Strong experience with embedded Linux, including areas such as device drivers, kernel modules, cross-compilation, or hardware bring-up.
- Solid systems and network programming experience, particularly TCP streams, socket programming, transparent proxies, or comparable low-level networking technologies.
- Practical experience with Docker or containerization for constrained, embedded, or appliance-based deployments.
- Demonstrated ability to profile and optimize systems using load testing, memory/CPU profiling, and flame graph analysis.
- Working knowledge of AWS and Infrastructure as Code concepts, with hands-on exposure to technologies such as Terraform or CloudFormation considered valuable.
- Experience with a production fleet, IoT platform, embedded device, or hardware appliance is strongly preferred.
- Additional experience with C, C++, or Go, as well as eBPF, netfilter, HAProxy, or Envoy, is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with RADIUS and observability technologies such as CloudWatch, Splunk, or SLO-based monitoring is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues across hardware, operating systems, networking, and cloud infrastructure.
- Ability to take ownership of complex technical problems and work effectively in a distributed engineering environment.
Benefits
- Remote work opportunity based in India.
- Direct-hire.
