Join Cardboard as a Senior Backend Engineer and own the systems powering browser-based video editing, including media processing, exports, proxies, analysis, and agent-powered editing.

Requirements

3+ years of experience as a backend engineer
Strong experience owning and operating production backend systems.
Strong understanding of state management, queues, workers, storage, databases, and service contracts.
Experience designing scalable APIs and backend services.
Ability to design reliable systems for long-running and asynchronous workflows.
Strong problem-solving and end-to-end ownership.
Experience with one or more of TypeScript, Go, Rust, or Python.
Ability to translate product requirements into practical backend architecture.
Strong understanding of performance, reliability, and operational simplicity.
Interest in media processing, video infrastructure, and creative tools.

Bonus

Deep FFmpeg or GStreamer experience.
Knowledge of video codecs and formats such as ProRes, H.264/H.265, BRAW, R3D, and DNx.

Responsibilities

Own backend systems for video exports, proxy generation, media preprocessing, analysis, and agent-powered editing.
Design and maintain APIs and state contracts across the browser, workers, storage, and database.
Build reliable workflows for uploads, processing jobs, exports, progress tracking, and recovery.
Improve performance and reliability of long-running media workflows.
Design systems that remain simple and operable as projects, files, and usage scale.
Work closely with founders and engineers to solve complex video infrastructure problems.
Turn product goals such as faster exports and instant-feeling uploads into robust backend systems.
