About the Role
The Senior Software Engineer role involves building and evolving backend services using Rust and Python, with a focus on modernizing the engineering ecosystem by decommissioning legacy components. The position requires expertise in developing high-performance, scalable systems and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver quality solutions.
What You'll Do
- Build and enhance backend services that reduce operational costs through automation and process optimisation.
- Develop scalable Rust & Python-based services and APIs that support candidate acquisition, onboarding, and compliance workflows.
- Design, build, and maintain distributed systems using Python, with significant contributions in Java or Rust where appropriate.
- Drive technical requirements and take ownership of complex engineering initiatives from design through delivery.
- Lead the migration of legacy Ruby on Rails functionality into modern service-oriented architectures.
- Produce clean, well-tested, maintainable code and participate in code reviews to maintain high engineering standards.
- Develop and maintain RESTful APIs, GraphQL services, and integrations with third-party platforms.
- Implement monitoring, logging, and observability to improve platform reliability and performance.
Who You Are
- Strong commercial RUST OR Python development experience, ideally using Django or FastAPI.
- Demonstrated ability to work across multiple languages and quickly become productive in unfamiliar codebases.
- Experience designing and building scalable backend services and distributed systems.
- Strong experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and GraphQL.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, and database optimisation.
- Strong communication & interpersonal skills are a must.
Bonus Points
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools and coding agents to improve engineering productivity while maintaining code quality.
- Experience designing and implementing Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and integrations.
- Experience decomposing monolithic applications into service-oriented or microservice architectures.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and modern software engineering practices.
- Strong understanding of testing, observability, performance optimisation, and production monitoring.
Compensation
Role is 100% remote for 12 months paying £600-£650/day outside IR35.
Requirements
Rust expertise
You must be an expert in Rust development.
Python experience
Strong commercial experience in Python is required.
API development
Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and GraphQL is essential.
Distributed systems
Experience in designing and building scalable backend services and distributed systems is necessary.
Nice to Have
Familiarity with Ruby on Rails or Java is a bonus.
Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Redis is advantageous.
