About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Rust Developer to join our dynamic team remotely. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in advancing computational biology by developing scalable, open-source workflow execution engines. Your primary responsibility will be to create and enhance tools that enable scientists to deploy and manage large-scale computations more efficiently. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on impactful projects that contribute to scientific research and innovation. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Rust development, a strong understanding of scientific computing, and a passion for open-source contributions. Collaboration with international teams and participation in open standards development will be key aspects of this role.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 years of professional experience in Rust programming, with a proven track record of shipping production-quality code.
- Extensive experience contributing to or leading open-source projects, demonstrating strong collaboration skills.
- Familiarity with workflow engines, scientific computing, or large-scale computational systems.
- Proficiency with Rust crates related to lexing, parsing, validation, linting, formatting, testing, and execution of domain-specific languages.
- Strong skills in API design, development, and specification documentation.
- Experience using GitHub for project planning, issue tracking, and collaborative development.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
Optional but advantageous skills
- Experience with OpenAPI (Swagger).
- Familiarity with the Workflow Description Language (WDL).
- Task Execution Schema (TES).
- Kubernetes, cloud or HPC environments.
- Involvement with standards organizations such as GA4GH.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development, refinement, and maintenance of the Sprocket workflow execution engine and related Rust crates, including wdl, sprocket, and crankshaft.
- Enhance and extend the Workflow Description Language (WDL) specification by proposing, drafting, and shepherding changes through the ratification process.
- Collaborate on the evolution of the Task Execution Schema (TES), engaging with standards bodies and the open-source community to promote interoperability and standardization.
- Develop and maintain reference implementations, ensuring comprehensive API documentation using OpenAPI/Swagger standards.
- Participate in regular communication with internal teams, providing updates on progress and coordinating efforts to meet project milestones.
- Support the integration of the workflow engine within various computational environments, including cloud and HPC platforms.
- Assist in the adoption and implementation of open standards in scientific workflow execution, advocating best practices and community engagement.
