Python Developer - Django with Java &/OR Rust

About the Role

The Python Developer role involves building and evolving backend services using Python and Django, with a strong emphasis on Java or Rust. This hands-on position requires expertise in modernizing engineering ecosystems and migrating legacy systems to scalable architectures.

What You'll Do

• Build and enhance backend services that reduce operational costs through automation and process optimisation.
• Develop scalable Python-based services and APIs that support candidate acquisition, onboarding, and compliance workflows.
• Design, build, and maintain distributed systems using Python, with significant contributions in Java or Rust where appropriate.
• Drive technical requirements and take ownership of complex engineering initiatives from design through delivery.
• Lead the migration of legacy Ruby on Rails functionality into modern service-oriented architectures.
• Produce clean, well-tested, maintainable code and participate in code reviews to maintain high engineering standards.
• Develop and maintain RESTful APIs, GraphQL services, and integrations with third-party platforms.
• Implement monitoring, logging, and observability to improve platform reliability and performance.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions.

Who You Are

• Strong commercial Python development experience, ideally using Django or FastAPI.
• Advanced Java or Rust development experience (one or both required).
• Demonstrated ability to work across multiple languages and quickly become productive in unfamiliar codebases.
• Experience designing and building scalable backend services and distributed systems.
• Strong experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and GraphQL.
• Strong understanding of testing, observability, performance optimisation, and production monitoring.

Bonus Points

• Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, and database optimisation.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools and coding agents to improve engineering productivity while maintaining code quality.
• Experience designing and implementing Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and integrations.
• Experience decomposing monolithic applications into service-oriented or microservice architectures.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and modern software engineering practices.

Compensation

Role is 100% remote for 12 months paying £600-£650/day outside IR35.
