About the Role
About TORCH & the Business OS
TORCH is a Baghdad-based software company building the next generation of business software. We exist to simplify how organizations operate — cutting through complexity so teams can move faster and grow.
We're building the TORCH Business OS — one super platform where organizations run everything, from finance and sales to supply chain, HR, documents, and communication, instead of stitching together a dozen disconnected tools. One platform, one data truth, one experience — with an AI agent embedded across every app. This role sits at the heart of it: you'll help build the desktop application and backend services the Business OS runs on.
The Opportunity
We're hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to own systems across our full stack: the Rust core of a cross-platform Tauri desktop application, a 20+ service TypeScript microservices backend, and the CI/CD that ships both. This is a broad, high-ownership role for an engineer who likes depth and breadth — you'll shape architecture, not just implement tickets.
This role spans three areas — Rust systems, TypeScript backend, and release engineering. You do not need to be an expert in all three today. If you're strong in two and genuinely excited to grow the third, you're a real fit. In practice, we expect most strong candidates to come in deep on TypeScript/Node and grow into the Rust core.
What You'll Work On
- The Rust core of a Tauri v2 desktop app: async (tokio), local SQLite (sqlx), custom IPC, OS keychain integration
- A Node.js/Fastify microservices monorepo (Nx, pnpm) running on PostgreSQL and Redis
- Multi-platform, signed releases via GitHub Actions and Docker — owning the pipeline that ships both the desktop app and the backend
- API design, data modeling, and the integration layers that hold the platform together
What You Bring (Must-Have)
- 3+ years of backend engineering experience building scalable, production systems
- Strong TypeScript and solid Node.js / Fastify (or similar) experience
- Strong PostgreSQL and ORM experience (Prisma and/or Drizzle), plus solid REST API design
- Comfort with Docker, CI/CD, and containerized deployment
- Solid engineering discipline — automated testing (unit/integration) and clean, well-structured, maintainable code
- Rust experience — or demonstrable systems-programming strength and a real appetite to own our Rust core
- Clear communication in Arabic and English, and a collaborative, ownership mindset
Nice to Have
- Tauri or other desktop app development
- Familiarity with how frontend clients consume backend services (REST / IPC integration)
- Redis / BullMQ job queues, WebSocket realtime
- Auth protocols (JWT, OIDC, SAML, WebAuthn)
- Microservices at scale; monitoring and observability
Location & Type
Full-time, permanent. On-site in Baghdad, Iraq.
